Do I Have to Tell My Employer I’m Going to Rehab?

You may need to tell your employer that you need medical leave or a workplace accommodation, but you generally do not have to disclose every detail of your rehab treatment to supervisors or coworkers. The amount of information required depends on the type of leave or accommodation you request, employer policies, and applicable law.

What do I need to say if I am requesting FMLA leave?

You need to give the employer enough information to understand that the leave may qualify under the Family and Medical Leave Act. The employer may require medical certification. You do not necessarily need to give your direct supervisor a detailed substance-use history.

The Department of Labor states that qualifying substance-use treatment can be protected by FMLA when provided by a health-care provider or on referral from one and when the other FMLA requirements are met.

Do I have to tell coworkers why I am away?

No. You generally do not need to disclose your diagnosis or treatment to coworkers. Employers must keep employee medical information confidential under the ADA, with limited exceptions.

What if I need an ADA accommodation?

You may need to tell the employer that a medical condition is creating a work-related limitation and that you need a change at work. If the disability or need for accommodation is not obvious, the employer may request reasonable medical documentation.

Can I simply say I need medical leave?

That may be enough to start a leave conversation, but the leave administrator can request additional information or certification needed to determine eligibility. Ask HR what documentation is required rather than oversharing informally.

Who at work should I contact?

Use the employer’s established leave process, which may involve HR, a leave administrator, or a benefits vendor. If possible, avoid sending sensitive medical details broadly by email or to coworkers who do not need them.

Can the rehab communicate with my employer?

Only within applicable privacy rules and the authorization you provide. A release of information can be limited to what the employer or leave administrator legitimately needs, such as dates of treatment or functional restrictions, rather than an entire treatment record.

What should I arrange before entering treatment?

Review leave policies, identify the correct HR contact, ask about FMLA and paid-leave options, submit required documentation, and clarify how benefits and premiums will be handled during leave. Keep copies of notices and forms.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to tell my boss I have a substance use disorder?

Not necessarily. You may be able to work through HR or a leave administrator and provide only the medical information needed for the leave or accommodation process.

Can HR keep my medical information confidential?

The ADA requires employers to keep medical information confidential and separate from ordinary personnel files, subject to limited exceptions.

Can I take FMLA without explaining why?

You must provide enough information for the employer to recognize that the leave may be FMLA-qualifying and provide certification if required.

Should I tell my employer before I leave for rehab?

When circumstances allow, follow normal notice procedures before leave begins. Emergency or unforeseeable situations can have different notice rules.
