Can I Drive Myself to and From IOP?

Many adults can drive themselves to and from an intensive outpatient program when they are legally and medically safe to drive. IOP is outpatient care, so participants generally live outside the treatment setting and arrange their own transportation, but no one should drive while intoxicated, sedated, dangerously sleep-deprived, or otherwise impaired.

Why is driving different in IOP than residential rehab?

IOP participants return home after scheduled treatment sessions rather than living at the facility. That makes transportation part of the weekly treatment routine. The ability to drive safely can affect attendance and should be discussed if medications, substance use, or health conditions create concerns.

What if I take a medication that can cause drowsiness?

Follow the medication label and the prescriber’s guidance. Some psychiatric, pain, sleep, withdrawal, or other medications can affect alertness or reaction time, especially when first started or adjusted.

What if I used alcohol or drugs before an IOP session?

Do not drive while impaired. Contact the treatment program and arrange safe transportation or seek medical help if needed. Recent substance use may also warrant clinical reassessment rather than simply attending the session as usual.

Can relapse change whether I should drive?

Yes. If substance use resumes, driving safety becomes an immediate concern. Tell the treatment team honestly so they can assess whether IOP remains appropriate and whether additional support is needed.

See Trinity’s guide on what happens if relapse occurs during IOP.

What if transportation problems are making me miss treatment?

Tell the program early. Transportation is a practical treatment-access barrier. The team may be able to discuss schedule adjustments, alternative transportation planning, or whether another treatment format is appropriate.

Does Trinity provide transportation to IOP?

Do not assume so. Current transportation options, parking rules, and program-specific requirements should be confirmed directly with Trinity Behavioral Health.

Frequently asked questions

Can I drive myself home after a difficult therapy session?

Emotional distress alone does not automatically make driving unsafe, but if you feel unable to concentrate, are panicking, sedated, or otherwise impaired, tell staff and arrange a safer option.

Can a family member drive me?

Yes, if that fits the program’s arrival and departure procedures.

Can I use rideshare or public transportation?

Often, yes, but confirm the treatment location and any facility-specific arrival requirements.

What is Trinity’s current IOP transportation policy?

Ask the Trinity IOP team directly because operational policies can change.
