What Is an Intensive Outpatient Program?
SAMHSA describes intensive outpatient and partial hospitalization as forms of outpatient care that may include individual appointments, group sessions and coping-skills education, with more coordinated care than standard outpatient visits. NIAAA also identifies intensive outpatient care as a treatment level for people with more complex needs who do not require 24-hour residential or inpatient treatment.
What Does Trinity's Intensive Outpatient Program Include?
Our IOP combines therapy, skills development, relapse-prevention work and continued recovery support.
Individual Therapy
One-to-one therapeutic support can address personal recovery goals, challenges, triggers and treatment progress.
Group Therapy
Structured group sessions provide guided skills practice, peer support and opportunities to apply recovery strategies.
CBT & DBT Skills
Group programming includes cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) skills.
Relapse Prevention
Clients work on recognizing triggers, strengthening coping strategies and building a practical plan for continued recovery.
Drug Education
Education can help clients better understand substance-use patterns, recovery needs and choices that support treatment goals.
Aftercare Planning
Continued-care planning helps connect IOP treatment with the next appropriate phase of recovery support.
Who May Benefit From Intensive Outpatient Treatment?
IOP can be considered for people who need structured, recurring treatment while living outside a 24-hour residential setting. It may also serve as a step-down from a more intensive level of care or a step-up from standard outpatient treatment.
ASAM emphasizes matching each person to a level of care through multidimensional assessment and reassessing as treatment needs change.
IOP Is One Part of a Continuum
IOP is not automatically the right setting for every person. Clinical needs, withdrawal risk, medical concerns, psychiatric symptoms, living environment and recovery supports can all affect the appropriate level of care.
Trinity also provides other treatment levels, including detox, residential treatment and PHP/day treatment.
IOP vs. PHP vs. Residential Treatment
The key difference is the amount of structure and on-site support provided. A clinical assessment helps determine which setting best matches current needs.
